How to add a business to Google Maps

With a Business Profile if you own it, with "Add place" if you don't: which route fits you and how to add it step by step.

In short

  1. If the business is yours, create a Google Business Profile instead of "adding a place": that is how the business gets onto the map and how you manage its information.
  2. First check whether your business is already on the map. If it is, don't create a new place; claim the profile.
  3. You can suggest a missing place you don't own (for example a park or a shop) in the Maps app with Contribute › Add place.

Two routes: who adds it matters

A business gets onto Google Maps in two ways. Any user can add a place they see missing; that is a contribution, and the owner does not manage the place's information. The owner instead creates and verifies a Google Business Profile. Google's help page also directs business owners to this route. For a business you own, the right route is always the profile: only then are the phone, hours, photos and review replies in your hands.

First check: is your business already on the map?

Search Google Maps for your business name and neighbourhood. A customer or Google may have added your business already.

  • It appears and no one has claimed it: claim and verify it with the ownership link on the profile.
  • It appears but someone else manages it: send an ownership request through the profile; don't create a new listing.
  • It doesn't appear: create a Business Profile with the steps below.

Google allows one profile per business. Creating a second listing for the same business can lead to suspension.

If you are the owner: adding it by creating a profile

  1. Go to business.google.com/create with your Google Account.
  2. Enter your business name as it appears on your sign, and your primary category.
  3. If customers come to you, enter the address and move the map pin onto your door. If you go to customers, choose your service area instead of an address.
  4. Add your phone number and website.
  5. Verify your business with the method Google offers. Your business appears on the map after verification.

Every step and the verification methods are covered in detail in our guide How to create a Google Business Profile.

Adding a missing place you don't own

For a park, a place of worship or a shop in your neighbourhood that doesn't appear on the map:

  • On a phone (Android and iPhone): open the Google Maps app, tap Contribute, then Add place, and follow the steps on screen.
  • On a computer: search for the place's address on Google Maps and use the option to add a missing place.

The place you suggest goes live after Google's review and is visible to everyone. Adding it to Apple Maps is a separate task and doesn't affect Google Maps.

If the location looks wrong

If your business is on the map but the pin is in the wrong place or the address is incomplete, correct the address and pin from the profile if you manage it. If you don't manage the profile, you can tell Google with Suggest an edit on the place.

Common mistakes

  • Adding your own business with "Add place" and not creating a profile: the information is not under your control.
  • Creating a second listing for a business already on the map.
  • Adding a neighbourhood, slogan or keyword to the business name.
  • Showing an address where you don't receive customers (home, virtual office) as a shop; choose a service area instead.
