How to change your business name on Google Maps
The steps, Google's naming rule, the risk of adding keywords to the name and what to do if the change isn't approved.
In short
- You change the name from your Business Profile with Edit profile.
- The name must be the same as the real name you use on your sign and documents.
- Adding a city, neighbourhood or keyword to the name breaks the guidelines; the profile can be suspended.
Step by step
- Open your Business Profile on Google.
- Open Edit profile.
- Update the business name field and save.
- The change goes through Google's review; the old name may keep showing in the meantime. Google may ask you to verify again for some name changes.
Google's naming rule
Google wants the business name to reflect the name you use in the real world: on your sign, invoices, website and the name customers know. Examples of what not to add:
- Marketing slogans or offers ("… open every day", "… on sale").
- A neighbourhood, city or service name unless it is part of the real name.
- Phone numbers, web addresses, all capital letters or special characters.
- Another brand's name, unless you are an authorised dealer or service.
If the change is not approved
- Make sure the new name also appears on your sign and website; Google may compare the name with these sources.
- Add a photo of your sign to the profile.
- Keep business registration or tax documents ready; the support team may ask for proof.
What happens when the name changes?
Your reviews, photos and profile history stay; only the displayed name changes. Make the same change on your website, social accounts and directory listings on the same day; the same name, address and phone everywhere make it easier for Google to recognise your business correctly.
