How do you delete a Google Business Profile?

Delete it, mark it permanently closed or step down as a manager: the right path depends on your situation.

In short

  1. You usually cannot fully delete a business's listing on Maps; if the business is real, the place stays.
  2. If the business has closed, the right path is to mark the profile "permanently closed".
  3. If you want to stop managing the profile, remove yourself as a manager; the listing stays without an owner.
  4. If you moved, do not delete: update the address so your reviews stay on the profile.

First decide what you want

  • The business has closed: mark the profile as permanently closed. People searching see that it has closed and do not make a wasted trip.
  • You are temporarily closed (renovation, season): use the temporarily closed option and undo it when you reopen.
  • You moved: edit the address. The new address may need verification.
  • There is a second profile for the same business: report the extra one to Google as a duplicate.
  • You will no longer manage the profile: transfer ownership or remove yourself.

Marking it permanently closed

  1. Open your Business Profile on Google.
  2. Open Edit profile and go to the hours section.
  3. Set the business status to permanently closed and save.

This change is also reviewed by Google; the interface changes from time to time, so option names may look different.

Removing yourself as a manager

When you remove yourself in the profile settings, you stop managing the profile; the business stays visible on Maps and someone else can request ownership. If the profile has other owners or managers, first transfer ownership to the right person.

A profile you do not own

If your business appears on a profile someone else manages, request ownership rather than trying to delete it. Google notifies the current owner; if there is no reply, it may direct you to verification.

Do not

  • Delete the profile and open a new one because you moved; you lose your reviews and history.
  • Report another business's profile as "closed"; that is misleading and against Google's rules.
