What should an SEO package include?

When you buy an SEO package you are buying a list of work and someone’s time; here is what that list should contain.

In short

  1. A good SEO package reviews your site first, then gives you the work to be done and the reasons in writing.
  2. Technical fixes, content and local visibility (Business Profile) are handled together.
  3. Be sceptical of a package that guarantees rankings: according to Google, no one can guarantee a particular position.

What are you buying with an SEO package?

SEO is all the work done so that Google understands your site correctly and searchers choose you. When you buy a package, you are really buying a list of work and the time of the person who will do it. So the important question is not "first page for how many keywords" but "which work will be done each month, and how will it be reported".

What a package should include

  • Initial review: crawling and indexing of the site, speed and mobile display, broken links, page titles and descriptions.
  • Keyword and page plan: what your customers actually search for and which page each search should lead to.
  • Technical fixes: fixing the problems found in the review; who does it (the agency or the site developer) written down from the start.
  • Content: clearer service pages and articles that answer real questions. Google's guide stresses the importance of helpful content written for users.
  • Local visibility: Google Business Profile, a consistent name, address and phone, and reviews. For a local business, many customers come from Maps.
  • Measurement and reporting: Search Console data; clicks, impressions and which searches people came from. A monthly report with the work done and next month's plan.

What changes the price?

  • The size and technical condition of the site.
  • The target area (one district or several cities) and the number of services searched for.
  • Who writes the content.
  • Whether Business Profile and review management are included.

Warning signs

  • "Guaranteed top ranking" or "first page in so many days". Google's own guide states plainly that no service or tool guarantees rankings.
  • An offer that does not say what will be done, or talks about "secret methods".
  • Buying links in bulk from unrelated sites; it is against Google's rules and can harm your site.
  • An arrangement that leaves Search Console and Business Profile access with the agency rather than you. Accounts should be in your name.

Ask when you get an offer

  1. What will you do in the first month, and in the second?
  2. Which numbers will the report contain, and where will they come from?
  3. Who will make changes to the site?
  4. In whose name are the accounts and access?
  5. How does the contract end, and does the work done stay with me?
